Immediate Payments

Rating to change based on feedback.

This morning I made use of Standard Bank's ridiculously expensive immediate payment service (Fees: Standard Bank = R35 or Capitec = R7.50).

The recipient, who banks with Grow Bank (formerly Access Bank), contacted me to say the payment hadn't arrived. Furthermore, she told me that immediate payments into her bank NEVER clear immediately. And now she must wait till Thursday.

So the question is simple - WHY???

Why does Standard Bank take a R35 fee for doing nothing? Except covering themselves by saying that immediate payments cannot be reversed?

How many R35 fees are collected with zero service delivery?

I'm sorry for not getting back to you sooner after talking with Standard Bank about my complaint.

I must give 5 Stars to the agent, Gorden Bila, who handled my complaint. He was fast to respond and very empathetic. He also quickly arranged for the R37 fee to be reversed. Thank you, Gorgen.

For the general public, here is what I learned Standard Bank does not inform its clients regarding immediate payments.

1) Before making an immediate payment it is YOUR responsibility to ensure the beneficiaries bank is registered with PASA. There is no reference to PASA in Standard Bank's six-page Terms and Conditions available on the Internet banking payment page. PASA stands for Payments Association of South Africa.

2) The rule of thumb is that only SA's major banks are registered ie Standard Bank, ABSA, FNB, Nedbank and Capitec. CHECK if you are making an immediate payment to any micro bank eg Grow Bank/Access Bank

3) If you do not check and the bank is not registered with PASA your immediate payment will NOT be immediate, you or the beneficiary will NOT be notified and Standard Bank will keep the fee. Business accounts are charged the highest rate of R37

4) If you discover this has happened and you want the fee reversed the best bet is to open a complaint here.
