I know who I am, who are you?

Unsolicited phone calls with inadequate identification -

a) so you phoned me, do you not know who you are phoning?

b) when you phone me, you could be anybody. Most likely you are who you say you are, but what if you are not - I will then be giving a ********* info they can use to impersonate me.

c) you try and identify yourself with info that could easily be in the public domain - the first 6 numbers of my ID - REALLY?!!? like, that is my DATE of BIRTH! Like, no-one can find out when I was born if they want to - PLEASE.... Even my complete ID number is too easy - we have to specify that for EVERYTHING (insurance, cell phones, educational institutions, etc. etc.), who knows how many of those providers could have been compromised. Your processes are setting up your customers to be de*****ed - your phone calls are desensiting them so that if a ********* calls, they will disclose all their identifying info without a thought, and then who will take accountability when their accounts are cleaned out?

d) a proper security check should involve info which only the bank and the customer would know, taking into account that identity theft means things like ID number, address, etc. are easy to get.

e) so you are clueless on how to respond, and instead I must go to a bank? What? Now? When I have a meeting to attend, work to do, I must now travel from Outer-Pofadder to Waarsmymaaitjiefontein to get to my nearest branch? Just as it closes. (when I could get to my closest branch, guess what - it was closed! if you are going to call your customers and tell them they need to get to a branch, maybe all your branches should be open normal office hours at least).

f) you cannot even tell me why, or how urgent? Please, I know PPI means you must be circumspect, but surely you can say whether its about suspicious activity on the account, balance query, some offer (marketing), or similar - that is so generic it cannot be considered confidential info, but would help me understand the importance and/or urgency.

g) why not ask me to call back?? OK it did take from 16:26- 16:39 to get through, and the only reason I waited so long was in case there was ********** activity on my account. And guess what else - the security questions the bank asked this time were equally weak - my ID number and my address.

This is not the first time we have been through this, and I know of other customers who have the same problem - all the above could be avoided if Standard (and the other banks where applicable) woke up and started doing proper security checks, regardless of who calls who.
