Home Loan Day Light *******

am really disturbed by the practise and work ethics of Standard Bank, I’m so disappointed. Would you please assist.

My mother resigned in 2011 and decided to settle her home loan at the Standard bank Ixopo branch. That was in 2011. Last week when my mother went to fetch her Title Deed she was advised that she owes R46000. She spoke to the consultants in Ixopo and they advised her that the consultant was supposed to advise her to close the account in which she was not advised. When they called the Standard bank head office they advised my mom she signed. My mom advised that yes she did sign at the branch and this was to say she is settling the account as discussed with the consultant.

I wrote to Standard bank (Ref: ***)questioning why they have not contacted my mother to advise her of the accumulating interest after so many years she has not been contacted they advised they will contact my mother. They called my mother saying that she should pay the amount because 1. She signed 2. They were sending statements to my mother’s old address ( in which it was her responsibility to update the bank that she is no longer using that address, further on saying she is not their only client)

My argument here is I think this is unfair practise. My mother is Standard banks client she has been banking with Standard bank for over 20 years. If they could see that after so many years she is not responding they could have at least called or send a text to notify her. What this means is that if my mother hadn’t gone to the bank this was going to go on for years and they would have come to repossess the house as they told my mother if she does not want any surprises she should make arrangements. Not a single phone call or single text. After 3 months without making payments Standard bank should have at least tried another form of communication. My second question is if the consultant failed to advise the client who should be punished? Who should take the fall as the consultants are trained and the client is not trained. Why is the client being punished for not being advised properly. Trusting that you are signing what you have just discussed with the consultant. What this means is that each time one has to sign documents with Standard bank they need to take all documents home and read and take to the attorneys to verify that what you are signing is in order….. because one can’t trust a bank that they have banked with for so long?

This is unfair practise and misleading clients, this is day light ******* and I am disappointed not even angry with the work ethics of Standard Bank. The Ixopo branch has really been supportive and one consultants even mentioned that if a mistake was made Standard Bank must acknowledge and not take my mother through so much pain. Who would want to “settle” the account and still keep the loan opened just to incur interest. When they called they advised my mom that she has insurance my mother did not know that she had insurance because if she had insurance she would have claimed last year when her geyser burst she fixed that alone from her own pocket because according to her knowledge she no longer had insurance and the house was not Standard banks house. Even when the hail storm destroyed our house she fixed it herself. Why would she do that if the bank was transparent
