Handed over to lawyers without being notified of debt of a closed accout that was fully paid and the card discarded

I was referred to this site by fellow sufferers to see what other people go through. I closed a credit card in October last year. The card was discarded and the account was closed as far I know. I had a debit order for Standard Hospital plan debiting the credit card. I assumed that would lapse when the account was closed. Guess what...I received calls and emails from attorney for non-payment of the credit card. Honestly speaking, I was very sure that this was a mistake. After about 20 emails explaining myself, I am told the account was forcefully debited by the insurance and I must pay.
I feel I was treated unfairly. There were no statements sent to me regularly as per requirement of consumer credit act. The letter of demand that I recieved on 29 May is dated the 17 May 2017 the very same day that the attorneys were in contact with me.

How was i supposed to know that I am owing if there was no communication? Why did the bank not call me if the account remained upaid?

I am told the card still exists and has a credit balance. How? what does it take to close the credit card I wonder.

Karma will sort this one out I suppose.
