Fictitious Credit Card Account created in my name
A couple of months back, I received a call from a Standard Bank representative trying to sell me a new credit card. I made it clear that she needed to send me the quotation with the interest rates so I can see if its worth my while. That was the last I heard of her. I was surprised to receive messages that my credit card was ready for collection at a branch. As I had not app**** for one, I simply ignored the messages. On the 9th of April I received a credit card statement indicating I owed R25 on my Titanium Credit Card. I called Standard Bank Credit Card division to set the record straight. I was advised that the account would be closed. Today to my surprise, I received an sms from the credit card rehabilitation section. Apparently I owed R373 from this credit card that;
1. I did not apply for or sign for anywhere. 2. I requested to be closed when I got the statement in April 2018.
I strongly suspect that there is an element of ********** activity in all this. How can a credit card account be opened without an official authorization and sign off from the intended recipient? It is debt so a person needs to be furnished with a qoutation and accept that they are happy and will be liable for transactions on that card. That never happened with me.
So I am now wondering what kind of systems does Standard Bank employ that allows the creation of fictitious accounts and pass them as genuine? I am lucky that the account was never used. Who knows I could be owing R50k right now for something I never requested.
May someone at Standard Bank please investigate this obvious flaw in their internal control system.
