Dissatisfaction about my business account getting overdrawn without having been notified from an early stage.

Ref: Acc no. : ***

I have been a Standard bank client since 1997. And now I regard myself as a valuable client. I had also opened a business account with the them that has been in existence for more than 4 years. This month of July I received an sms notification that was telling me that my account was in arrears. Knowing that I do not have a debt except those that I pay through debit orders I collected my post, only to find that I am told that it is in arrears of over R 8000. I then called my private bank to seek clarity on the matter. I asked her that how come the bank says I we so much money where as I was not even notified of the arrears at early stage and what the debt may be for. She explained that it is an overdraft and I said to her I have never had an overdraft who requested an overdraft on behalf. She said the type of business account I have has an overdraft. If it doesn't accumulate funds it automatically get overdrawn. My question was that, this account had stayed without funds for more than 6 months but has never get overdrawn and in 2016 was working until towards the end. From 2017 until now when it gets overdrawn, why didn't the bank make me aware just like my personal accounts, cheque and credit accounts.

I belief the bank has failed to do it's work and has been a failure from their side and I cannot be held liable for something I was not aware of. I remember last year I deposited R800 just to keep it running thinking that it will be enough because I knew that it has not been working for sometime. But, finding out that it owes so much money without having been notified that very cruel and paying the money is not an option. I would like the the bank to take responsibility in failing to notify me when the debt piles up which I believe my interest as a banker were neglected. The manner in which they treated this matter leaves much to be desired and as a consumer who receive the statement of the account after a very long time I am holding the bank liable. Ever since I have opened this account I had never received even a courtesy call from the bank.

I would like to request the bank that they write off the debt as it has been a failure from their side to notify me about overdrawn three months earlier just like they do with personal accounts I have with them. With my personal accounts they notify me when they exceed limits or get overdrawn. As a result of this inconsistency I will not take responsibility especially that my first account was deactivated due to lack of funds. If procedures change why didn't they notify me.

Hope this matter get attention it deserves and treated with high regard. I cannot afford to be blacklisted due to the bank's neglency.
