Deeply Disappointed with Standard Bank and Standard Bank Insurance

I am writing to express my extreme disappointment with both Standard Bank and Standard Bank Insurance following the recent passing of my mother.

I was granted signing powers on my mother’s Standard Bank account while she was still alive, which I understood would allow me to assist in managing her financial matters, especially during times when she was unable to do so herself. My mother passed away recently, and I attempted to follow up on two insurance policy debit orders reflected on her bank statements.

When I visited the Cape Gate branch, I was told that I needed to speak with the insurance department for further information. However, the insurance team outright refused to assist me, stating that my signing powers were no longer valid due to my mother’s passing. This was never explained to us when we initially arranged for me to have authority over her account.

All I requested was clarity on what policies were in place so I could prepare the correct documentation for a claim. But even that basic information was denied to me.

This experience has only been compounded by a previous issue. When we originally granted me signing powers, we explicitly requested that a bank card being used by someone in the family to misappropriate funds be stopped. Standard Bank failed to do this, and the card remained active.

Now, during one of the most emotionally difficult periods of my life, I am faced with red tape, poor service, and a complete lack of compassion or accountability. I reside in a different province from where my mother lived, making this process even more challenging, and yet Standard Bank has offered me no support.

The treatment I received was cold, dismissive, and entirely unhelpful. I am truly appalled by this experience. It has left me with a very negative impression of Standard Bank as a financial institution, one that I had trusted to handle sensitive family matters with care.

I sincerely hope that someone at Standard Bank will take this complaint seriously and ensure that no one else has to endure such a distressing experience at a time of grief.
