Debit card cancelled without consent

Last night when I went to purchase some groceries I was met with an embarrassing situation where my card wouldn't process the payment once I got to the till, and was forced to leave the food behind given that I was unable to pay for it.

Getting through to the customer services centre proved to be futile after numerous attempts and I was forced to call the ***** line to find out what the heck was going on.

Once I managed to get through I stated my problem only to be told that someone else had phoned the bank the previous day to cancel the card. Not only was I horrified that this had happened, I was absolutely astounded by the fact that the bank had not once phoned me to check if I was in fact cancelling my card. According to the consultant, this occurred internally and stated that another consultant from a loan centre called to cancel the card on behalf of whomever had instructed him/her to do so. I clearly stated that I have absolutely no loans and couldn't understand why they would allow this to happen.

Unfortunately, the best that I could muster was "we're sorry for the inconvenience caused" and the offer to have a card shipped to me via a priority courier service. However, my concern is that my financial information has been compromised and at present there is no way of knowing until I receive my new card details. It is shocking to think that Standard Bank was able to let this slip through the cracks and I honestly feel that my money isn't safe with them at all if it was this easy for someone else to cancel my card.
