closed accounts that have bank charges

i am due to pay my rent on 1 June and i wont be able to do so as i "owe" standard bank money on an account that i was under the impression was closed down quite a few years ago.

i need my money to be refunded ASAP as i was only informed of this R5243.87 overdraft on the dormant account on Sa****ay (28 May 2016) when i received a call from the company they sourced to collect the money.

monday i phoned standard bank and requested a statement (due to ****s, ***** and *******ionon i can not just pay money that i was unaware of) as i was under the impression it was a closed account. i requested that the account be closed when i opened the account i am currently using with standard bank. i was told that the statement will be requested and i will receive it within 3 to 5 days.

then this morning standard bank (not the collectors as appointed) deducted the money out of my account. i need to pay my rent and i need to buy food and toiletries aswell as get myself to and from work for the month of June. this is imposibble due to R5243.87 that i now do not have available. i have debit orders that still need to go out of my account and i really can not afford to be left with more than half of my salary wrongfully taken.

the dept collector confirmed receiving an email stating that i have requested the statement before i can make arrangements to pay the money. i do not understand how standard bank can take my money without following up on my query first. i was in the process of making the payment arrangements. in no way was i ignoring their calls since it was brought under my attention. they have in the last few years however not contacted me regarding this account. which i find was the wrong way of handling the outstanding amount.

what am i to do now? standard bank simply answers me by saying that i should send an email with my rental contract and rental invoices and my proof that i do pay rent on a monthly basis. then they will see if i qualify for a refund within 5 to 7 working days.

i dont understand how they could take the money when the have appointed someone else to collect the money on their behalve and i was in the process of making reasonable arrangements.

please assist with what i can do to get the word out and get my money back from standard bank. this R5243.87 is outstanding on an account that i closed years ago (according to my knowledge) and this amount is merely all the bank charges that has been charged on the account on a monthly basis.

kind regards
Justine Roux
