Charged for a closed credit card!

Having moved banks in December, I needed to close my Standard Bank credit card in January. I had paid off the balance owing on the card in full on 13 January.

On 16 January, I phoned card division to cancel the card, only to hold for close to 20 minutes with no one answering the call. I tried phoning card division again at 08:00 on 17 January, and eventually got through to a very helpful gentleman, who informed me that he was unable to close the card and I had to be put through to "retentions". After trying to transfer me twice, he realised that no one in this department was answering the phone and so he took my details (call reference 17 Jan / 08:00 / # ********** 63). He advised me that there was no settlement amount, and someone from retentions would phone me within 24 hours to close the card for me.

Needless to say, no one phoned within 24 hours. On 19 Jan (9:52) - 48 hours later - I received a call from Janay who was calling to finalise the closure of my credit card. She informed me that my settlement amount was R57.66, as billing had taken place on the 18th of Jan. She advisd me that I should have been advised of this in my initial call, which I was not - however I find this irrelevant, as the closure should have taken place prior to the billing date (seeing as I called the division on 17 Jan).

After some back and forth with Janay, she advised that she would have the fees waived and send me a letter detailing the closure of my account. Upon ending the call, I received an sms that didn't say much, but I assumed it meant my the issue would be sorted out by 24 January (request number ********** 202).

It is now 1 February, and not only have I NOT received notification of the closure of my credit card, I received a statement indicating that I still owe R57.66.

I paid off the card and phoned to have it closed PRIOR to the billing date, and not only have Standard Bank NOT sent me a letter of closure as advised in the 19 Jan phonecall, but I am still being charged a fee for a card that no longer exists - and this is AFTER I was advised that this fee would be waived.

I find this highly *********!! It seems as though Standard Bank deliberately neglected to call me back within the stipulated 24 hour period so that they could squeeze out 1 last month of banking fees!
