Card renewal notices

For the past few weeks, each time I have used a Standard Bank ATM it has prompted me that my debit card is due to expire in May 2017, and that I am to visit a branch with my ID to get a new card to ensure that my service isn't interrupted. Today I received an SMS notifying me of the same (see below) . Since, for once, I was in the area, had my ID on me and had a brief gap I deciced to call into the branch. I was subsequently told that since the card only expired in May, I would be charged R150 for a new card. The card would be free issue in May. While their message is arguably factual and doesn't say anything about charges, I do think that it is wrong to get customers who are being proactive and responding to a request there under effectively false pretences. I tried the call centre, who just told be to ignore the messages and go in May.

STANDARD BANK: Please note your card **3388 is due to expire on 05/17, card services will be disrupted. Visit your nearest branch for a renewal card.Queries? ********** 000.

Strike two.
