Bank indifferent to ***** hardships caused by security breaches.
On the 6th of May at approximately 2.30pm, I received a call from a woman claiming to be from the Standard Bank. What is interesting to note is there is no record on my call log of a call received at that time?! She claimed that there was someone making online transactions on my account, and she wanted to know if it was me spending large amounts online. She quoted R4000 at Clicks, R9000 at a sports goods store and an amount at MTN. I assured her I had been at work all day and had not been shopping. She gave me the following details: Her name: Lisa Moloio. The case number FTD ***. The phone number *** and her personal direct line: *** She said she would reverse the transactions for me, and would send me a QR to scan. She tried to get me to set up Whatsapp on my laptop but the school server blocked it. She kept telling me how urgent it was as more transactions were happening as we were speaking. So I gave her a colleague's cell number and then I scanned the QR code. She then said I needed to go into my banking App so she could set up 3D security on my card. I did what she instructed me to do. She sent me 3 or 4 QR codes with the same instruction to go into my banking app - she said she needed to do this to reverse the transactions that kept being done *****ulently as we were speaking. While I was on the app I could see amounts of R120 000 and similar amounts going into and out of my current account. She assured me she was reversing all the *****ulent transactions. She then said she would email me a statement of all the transactions that she had reversed. I went straight onto my email to check the statement and the email was to say that I had a loan approved. ( I will forward the email) That was when I realised I had been ****med and I immediately cut the call and blocked my cards. I then got an sms from the Standard Bank asking me if I had done transactions of R120 000 - I rep**** No and immediately phoned the ***** Department. They created a ***** case for me and deleted my banking profile. While I was on the phone to the ***** department, the lady assured me that they had not accessed my credit card, but had removed funds from my other accounts, including a personal loan account. I went straight to the police station for an affidavit but they told me I needed bank statements as proof. By now the bank was closed, so I took Wednesday, 7th of May off work and went to the bank. They printed me bank statements of my Mymo, current and personal loan accounts. They also assured me that my credit card had not been affected.
From what I can work out, the following *****ulent transactions were conducted on my account: 1. R4000 was transferred from my MyMo account to my Current Account. which had a balance of approximately R1019.00 2. They then put large sums of money into my current account and immediately transferred it to my loan account which had a balance outstanding of R68 000 on a total of R70 000. 3. They then withdrew R299 000 from my personal loan account (which only had an approved limit of R70 000).
This afternoon I went onto my banking app and discovered to my horror that my credit card had also been maxed out. This was not apparent on my banking app on the afternoon of the 6th of May, and the bank also assured me that this account had not been affected, so I am not really sure what happened regarding the credit account. I did not give out my pin number, account numbers or ID number. I also did not respond to any of the sms's I received, which I only read after I had stopped my cards.
To my absolute dismay standard bank then deducted fully installments for the *****ulent amounts above on both my loan (R7414.66) and credit card (R6500) accounts. This has put me in serious financial difficulty as I am a teacher and I do not earn sufficient to cover these exorbitant amounts.
To make matters worse I was informed that it would take 10 to 12 weeks to resolve. As it stands 6 weeks have gone by and I am not getting any positive feedback from the bank at all. I have tried in vain to have those two accounts frozen until the ***** case can be sorted out, but to no avail. I am being passed from one department to another with absolutely no regard for my situation. The bank will be deducting the next installment on these *****ulent activities within the next 10 days and I simply cannot afford it.
I alhave been with with standard bank for 35 years and have been a loyal customer for all this time. I am a thoroughly disappointed and disgusted in the way I'm being treated. Was that it nothing
