Bank charges - default

I was informed that i have a default against my name and than contacted Standard bank recoveries and spoke to Basani who confirmed it was bank charges and would send it to her admin department to revise. I fall to understand how can they list me wthout contacting me and informing me of this and how come i need to pay for charges after closing this account at the Park Town Branch.
