Spur in Durbanville - ********** experience!
A friend of mine and I went to the Spur in Durbanville for lunch yesterday afternoon (Sunday 27 October 2019). It can only be described as an awful dining experience - we will never go back there again. When we arrived, we were shown to table no. 1. We waited approximately 25 minutes before I approached the junior manager to find if she could take our order. She was ‘rushed off her feet’, trying to remain as calm as possible, while waiting on the other tables in our section, answering the phone, showing patrons to their tables and generally trying to ‘man the ship on her own’, however, she was very pleasant and took our order. I enquired as to the whereabouts of our waitron but it became evident that ‘ours’ and another waitron had disappeared for a break without telling anyone. The junior manager brought our sparkling water to the table. We waited for ages before asking another waitron if he could follow up on our meal. While we were waiting for our food, my friend accidently knocked over her glass of water…. There was still absolutely no sign of our waitron and those who saw what happened but assigned to other tables, ignored the fact that there were puddles of water on the table and seat next to me, dripping onto the floor. I tried mopping up as much of the water as possible with the serviettes available and tissues in my bag. Our food finally arrived, courtesy of the waitron (not ours) who had followed up on our order … the water was still over the table and seat. I asked him if he could mop up the water and to bring me a knife and fork. He disappeared and sent a young lady to mop up the mess. She had a very disapproving attitude, gave the table a single wipe with a serviette and also disappeared… water still on table and floor and still no available cutlery with which to eat my food. By then I was livid. I, personally went to the back of the Spur, fetched enough serviettes to clean up the mess and asked a waiter who was fetching an order to get me a knife and fork so that I could eat my food. Needless to say, by the time I started eating, my food was cold! When we had finished eating, I fetched our take-away boxes (which I’d located during my search for eating implements and serviettes). To make matters even worse… one of the Spur staff who was standing at the entrance of the restaurant (close to our table), spent ages scratching her head and digging in her ears. I was not surprised when the waitron suddenly appeared when it came to paying the bill. We told him we’d sort it out with the junior manager. Even though she was unaware of the fact that my friend had knocked over her glass of water, she was visibly multi-tasking as best she could and we felt that she was doing her best in a hostile environment. Apart from the shocking service and bad attitude of the waitrons, the portions were a lot smaller than I remember from years gone by… unlike the Cattle Baron which has offered a consistently high standard and value for money over the years.
