Sparks can’t enrol a child on a wheelchair even though their school has ramps

I have app**** for my Daughter at Sparks Carswald 10 January 2024.

The lady by name of Mandisa called me back abd said yes they do have space for Grade 5. I should provide all information on their website which I did.

She then came back asking for report and birth certificate which I did. On the application I did mention that my daughter is on a wheelchair chair which she did ask how is she going to move around.

I said she can move around and go to the bathroom on her own however I hired someone full time to look after her at school should she need help around the school.

She said she will escalate the matter.

After few days of reminders she came back and said my request was declined. I asked by who and on what grounds? May I please get a letter with the school’s letter head stating that they cannot take my child and why. She never responded me.

On Wednesday 24 January I received a call from a lady from their head office saying she heard about my request and they don’t have a problem with enrolling her the problem might only be the helper which they are not sure if the school principal will agree. But they can make a plan like screening the helper just to know who is in their school. She then arranged a meeting at the school for me to meet with the principal.

I went to meet the school principal on Thursday 25 January, she showed me around the school and after the meeting she said. They can enrol her but she still need to confirm with her area manager and she have to check with the teachers as well about how they feel about having a child on a wheelchair around the school.

She said I must go ahead with enrolment with the correct department. I called the lady from head office and she said she was busy travelling and she will call me back. She never called me back and till this day she’s ignoring my calls and messages. I also emailed Mandisa and sent her reminders without any response or acknowledgement my email. Question is does Spark not want my child at their school even though their school has ramps for the wheelchair. What were the ramps for if they can’t accept her?
