SMEG toaster - Neither the product nor customer service it worth the price

I bought a two-slice toaster with a kettle as a gift for my wife. We followed the instructions carefully but despite that the toaster burned the one side of the bread much darker than the other side. I logged a call wit SMEG and mailed them but never got any replies to date.

I took it back to the store and asked for it to be exchanged but insisted on testing it in store. The other toaster did the same.

So I requested a refund.

How hard is it when your only job is to create a toaster for it to toast bread evenly? My R225 ($13) toaster that cost 20 times less do a better job, even on customer service.

Want my advice, stay away or insist on testing it first.
