Smeg does not want to replace faulty toaster

Brand new toaster gave a spark and then went dead completely. Smeg does not cover this. They claim I or my wife inserted something into the toaster and broke the element. Guess what, they dont want to give me my toaster back after inspecting it! Why not? Are they going to fix it and sell it?? I am so disappointed in this fancy brand...I think its just another made in china product with a brand name on the outside.
