E-toll not convenient at all!
On the 30th of August 2020, I was travelling from Polokwane to Rustenburg and used the N1 and N4 roads. My car has an e-tag and it worked just fine on Nyl plaza and Kranskop before my nightmare started at Carousel plaza. I approached the Carousel plaza e-toll lane and anticipated it would open but a message said my e-tag was not detected and I should use the next lane. The traffic travelling on N1 south on Sunday was heavy and I had to reverse to join the next lane causing serious inconvenience to other motorists. I eventually joined the second lane (which accepts cash / e-tag), the e-tag could still not be detected, thus prompting me to reverse again to the next lane, causing serious gridlock. I managed to get to the third lane, and you guessed it, my e-tag was not detected! I did not have cash with me and only a debit card which is not accepted at pay points. I had to reverse again, God knows to where since there were no other lanes available. Luckily, a good Samaritan offered to pay for me to avoid reversing and causing further traffic jam, and it was really embarrassing and humiliating when you think you have a system that is supposed to be convenient but on the contrary works completely against you. I did not however have problems with all toll gates on N4. Sanral needs to maintain their tollgates, especially on N1 between Polokwane and Pretoria, and with the way things are, I would not recommend one to get an e-tag. It's much convenient to bear long queues knowing you will pass as long as you paid, than to approach an e-toll hoping it opens for you.
