Worrying Scenario
Trying to cancel a TV licence must be THE most stressful situation that one can possibly be involved in! !!!! Why should this be so? It seems as soon as one speaks to a call centre person and mentions the word Cancel, their hackles rise and then all sorts of reasons as to why one cannot cancel are put in your way.<br> We are moving house. Our TV set will go to a relation who is covered by a TV licence. It is as simple as that! All I need is the affidavit form, but after emails to tvlic info, do you think I can get a response. Not on your life.<br> <br> I can cancel my Telkom account, my mweb...I can change my address with the banks, accounts, but the SABC seem to think that once one has a licence it is impossible to cancel it. WHY, WHY, WHY. Can someone please respond and help me here, please!

Your enquiry dated 9 February 2015 regarding the cancellation of the TV licence with the number *** in your name since you are moving to your son with your television set and who is also a licence holder at his residential address.
Please allow me to explain without prejudice to the SABC's rights:
A single domestic television licence is payable per family, provided that (i) all television sets so licensed are used at the licence holder's residential address; and that (ii) all sets so licensed are used by members of the family.
? A family is deemed to consist of (i) all persons who permanently reside with the TV licence holder AND (ii) are dependent on him, AND (iii) are owed a legal duty of support by the licence holder.
? Adult (non-dependent) children, other non-dependent relatives (such as elderly parents receiving a pension or own income), or boarders or lodgers who are in possession of and/or using a TV set or sets are NOT regarded as family members of a household they reside with. They are NOT covered by the family's domestic licence but are separately liable for payment of television licence fees.
