SABC penalise customers for being honest
I had a really bad customer service experience with the SABC. My dad took out a TV licence for my sister and I in 2006 and they put it in his name. I tried to change it over the years but was told it can't be changed. Last year he turned 70 and my account was debited R74 instead of the usual R265, since people over 70 pay less. I thought maybe now they would be willing to put it in my name so that they get more money. At first I was told my dad can fill in an affidavit. He did and went to the police station to have it stamped. During that time they also sent me what looked like a TV licence in my name, but with an address in another province. I asked if this is now a new licence for me and said that is not what I asked for. I received no reply regarding that. After I sent them the signed affidavit at the end of September, I didn't hear from them for months! I kept sending emails asking for a reply but got nothing. I wasn't able to get onto the website either, it kept saying there were technical difficulties. Then earlier this year I finally got a reply that said the licence can't be transferred to my name. Why didn't they say this last year? Why did they let my father, who is a diabetic, go into a police station to get the affidavit stamped, in a time of corona? They still haven't answered me about that. In the mean time, they also decided to cancel my TV licence and sent me an email saying they did what I asked. I never asked that my licence be cancelled! I tried to phone at some point as well but the line kept going dead. I sent multiple emails again asking what I owe them exactly and if the licence they sent me last year is now my new licence. When I finally got a reply, they said I now owe them R424. Turns out, it was my new licence that they issued last year without my consent and because I didn't pay it right away, I've been getting penalties, so now it's way more than it was supposed to. Is it even legal to issue a TV licence for someone if they didn't ask for that? Meanwhile I was waiting for a reply from them. So I already paid the R74 from my original licence and now I also had to pay R450, 50 because they can't bother to answer my emails. It has gone up since because I had to wait so long for a reply as to why the amount was so much. One time I send them an email asking about an email they sent me. They answered by sending me the exact same thing I was asking about. How can a company be so ***********? I was actually willing to pay my licence in full, which is why I asked that it be transferred into my name. Instead, I got penalised for being honest. It is without a doubt the worse customer service I have ever had.
