SABC Fails again!

I contacted SABC to advise that I now have a partner and together we own one television set. I advised that the set that I initially had bought is no longer in my possession and the TV license should be cancelled. I paid whatever was owing, confirmed that I have a zero balance and that my TV license account was now closed.

My partner continued to pay his TV license. We are now married and still only own one TV set, for which we pay our TV license. Nevermind the fact that we don’t have an actual ariel connected to our television set because we are not interested in the SABC channels and nor have we watched them in the last, at least 5 years, possibly more. We have long given up on the fight with SABC, trying to prove that our TV set is only used for DVD's and portable devices. We do not watch or make use of the SABC channels at all. As mentioned we do not even have an aerial connected to pic up the channels. However we still pay our license.

I received an SMS last night to say that my account, on my ****en name which I haven’t used in 6 years as I have been married, is handed over to a debt collector for the amount close to R3000.

I have had no calls, no letter, no communication with SABC in the past almost 8 years now, as to my knowledge, my account was closed as I no longer owned a TV set. I have had no letter, no account summary, nothing but the SABC has politely handed me over. They managed to send me a sms to advise me though, so thank you for that. They have had no contact with me prior to this, but thanks for at least letting me know that you are possibly jeopardizing my credit record.

I will now spend hours and possibly weeks trying to prove that this is not a true debt and needs to be written off. Oh and at my expense might I add.

I have called the debt collector. Thanks to the consultant who tried to convince me that I AM liable for the amount, after I have explained when and how I closed my account, and confirmed that there was nothing owing and that the account was closed. I will now find time during my working day, before tending to my 3 kids, to make my way to a police station and send you and affidavit to prove that what I am saying is true. By law we need to keep proof of our documents for 5 years, most folks don’t do this, but in our home we do. I doubt that I have a proof of payment backdated to 8 or so years, but I will try my best SABC.

In closing, I thank the SABC for the anger, frustration, energy, time and funds that I am about to spend on you for no apparent reason.

A job well done!
