Negligence by Bidvest Bank
I retired with pension on 31/12/2019. I was requested by my former employer to hand in my retirement documents at their head office towards the end of September 2019. These retirement documents included a confirmation of bank details form. This form is completed by the bank of the account holder, and used by the Pension Fund to pay monthly pension and lump sum of pensioners. Towards the end of September 2019 I visited the Canal Walk branch (Cape Town) of Bidvest Bank so that they could complete the confirmation of bank details form for me. After completion of the form the Bidvest Bank clerk wrote her surname and initials on the form, signed the form and placed the official stamp of Bidvest Bank on the form to certify that all information on the form was accurate, true and correct. I then handed in the completed form at the head office of my employer and they dispatched all my retirement documents to the Pension Fund. My monthly pension and arrears pension was scheduled to be paid into my Bidvest Bank account by the Pension Fund on 13 March 2020. When the payment did not appear in my Bidvest Bank account by 16 March 2020 I contacted the Pension Fund and we discovered that the Bidvest Bank account number, provided and certified as correct by the Canal Walk branch of Bidvest Bank is in fact incorrect. The Bidvest Bank clerk at the Canal Walk branch of Bidvest Bank in Cape Town left out a digit of my bank account number. I have sent numerous e-mails to the Bidvest Bank service centre and contact centre, providing the Pension Fund payment schedule with all relevant information, and requested that the payment be traced and allocated to the correct account number. I also explained in my e-mails that, according to the Pension Fund, there would be a minimum payment delay of 4 weeks if Bidvest Bank return the payments to the Pension Fund. My requests for tracing and allocation were ignored. My lump sum was paid on 17 March 2020 but into the incorrect bank account number. The payment of my lump sum followed the same route than my pension payment. I have been severely and badly affected by the negligence of Bidvest Bank that certified an incorrect Bidvest Bank account number to be accurate, true and correct. I was left homeless and without food because of this error.
