Failing to fix the Engine light

My car has been showing the Engine light since i bought it and i have been taking it to Princess Crossing but they fail to fix it and no one has ever explained to me why it keeps on showing the engine light. I have have taken it for repairs four times if not more,I'm tired of fixing the same problem over and over again,and it frustrates me cause i don't know what that light means
