UNEXPLAINABLE ELECTRICITY OVERBILLING
There seems to be a serious issue with the electricity charges from Remote Metering Solutions (RMS). It’s becoming unreasonable, and it’s no longer something that can be ignored. It’s a total rip-off! I live alone and am hardly ever home, aside from the evenings, yet my monthly electricity bill still comes to just over R2,000.

24 Jul 2025, 16:40Good day, I must firmly state that your claim is INCORRECT. I have NOT received any phone calls or emails from your side. Furthermore, this is not an isolated issue affecting only me. Every single resident at Fynbos Lifestyle Estate has been raising ongoing concerns about these unexplained electricity overbillings for months, and yet, no meaningful action has been taken. Our community WhatsApp group is constantly flooded with complaints regarding this exact matter. Charging R60–R65 per day for electricity in a one-bedroom apartment, where the resident is barely home and only returns in the evenings, is completely unreasonable. This figure doesn’t even include water usage. I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH - something is clearly wrong, and it’s affecting many of us. I would now like your company to explain publicly, via Hello Peter, how you intend to resolve this. With nearly 400 (one-star reviews) already, the public perception is clear - it appears your company is simply cashing in. Please advise on your plan of action.

Please note that emails were sent to you on 16 July by Ntombikhona and on 25 July by Itumeleng. Itumeleng also confirms that he spoke with you telephonically on 25 July—first at around 11:00 and then again at 16:00, as per your request. During the second call, he explained how the billing works and what your charges relate to. His email was a follow-up to this conversation.
We’d like to take this opportunity to confirm an important point:
The smrt!Wallet is used to bill all municipal utilities, including electricity, water, and sanitation charges—not only electricity consumption. One of the components of the electricity tariff is a fixed daily charge, which is raised regardless of whether any power is used. This is standard in most postpaid municipal tariffs and is not linked to consumption.
According to our records, your usage reflects higher than average consumption, which aligns with the charges reflected on your statement. We recommend that you regularly view your electricity consumption graph (available on your dashboard in hourly intervals). The graph shows your usage over time, helping you identify when your consumption spikes and how often it happens. Here’s how to use this information effectively:
If you’re unsure how to access your usage graph or interpret the data, feel free to contact us.

- Review the graph daily or weekly to look for unusual increases, especially during times when you’re not home or not using multiple appliances.
- Note the times of day when spikes occur and try to match those periods with appliance usage (e.g., geyser, oven, washing machine, heater, air conditioner).
- If you notice consistent spikes at odd hours or times when no appliances should be running, this could point to:
- A faulty appliance (e.g., fridge cycling excessively, geyser thermostat not functioning properly)
- Appliances left running unknowingly (e.g. underfloor heating, pool pumps, old heaters)
- Wiring or insulation issues that may need investigation
If you’re unsure how to access your usage graph or interpret the data, feel free to contact us.
