Extremely High and Unexplained Electricity Charges

Extremely disappointed with Remote Metering Solutions. We moved into our apartment in March and within just 2–3 days, our electricity account was already around -R500. Since then, the charges have continued to be extremely high.

We recently paid R1,600 towards an outstanding balance of around -R3,325, yet less than three weeks later our balance was back to approximately -R2,700 and our electricity was disconnected. What is even more concerning is that immediately after the disconnection, I checked the balance and it was around -R2,700. When we called later, we were told the balance was now approximately -R2,857. Where did the additional R157 come from when our electricity was already disconnected?

We’ve also been told that R100 of electricity can be consumed in roughly two days, despite our relatively low usage. I’ve seen many other customers raising similar concerns about excessive charges. We simply want a transparent breakdown of the meter readings, consumption, tariffs and additional fees because these charges do not make sense to us.

Dear Olwethu,

Thank you for raising your concerns. We appreciate the opportunity to review the matter.
Please note that applicable utility tariffs changed during the period in question, including electricity tariff increases from 1 April 2026 and municipal tariff increases from 1 July 2026.
In addition to consumption charges, daily fixed charges apply as part of the relevant tariff structure, irrespective of consumption.
We have reviewed the account and meter information. As account-specific details cannot be discussed publicly, the Portfolio Team responsible for your building will contact you directly by email with a detailed breakdown and explanation of the charges, consumption and account balance.

We trust this will provide clarity on the concerns raised.

Kind regards,
The ismrt! team
