Customer reference: RD- ********** 0-1

In late June 2017, a telemarketer from Red Data sold me a 1-gig data deal, bundled with a hotsptter and life insurance. When I tried to activate the data on 13 July 2017, I couldn't.

I called Red Data contact centre on 18 July. The agent told me that I can't use red data on a prepaid number. She said the telemarketer had made a mistake, my contract had been cancelled and I would not be billed.

On 7 August, my account was debited R129. When I called to query, Claudette in the contact centre said this was for a hot spotter that was part of the package and that I had activated. In the five days that I tried to access any sort of data, I wasn’t able to. I certainly didn’t use any data at a hotspot.

I bought the contract for the data, which was misrepresented to me and couldn't be used. I feel that this debit order must be reversed and paid back to me. Claudette said her supervisor was in a meeting and would get back to me. I never heard back from anyone at Red Data.

What’s worse, is that Red Data trades on Vodacom’s name. In early August, I got a call from a very agressive telemarkter who said he had got my details from Red data and was selling Vodacom value-adds. I’m a Vodacom pay-as-you-go customer and I’m considering changing because of this experience. I think this is an example of dishonest trade and consumers should be warned about the way Red Data operates.
