Four dogs seriously ill — two months of broken promises from RCL Foods

RCL Foods / Ultra Pet Product: Ultra Dog Special Diet Joint Health 12kg Batch: RF530012 / LF531012 — Best Before 13/04/2026 In early March 2026, all four of my dogs became seriously ill after consuming food from the same bag of Ultra Dog Special Diet Joint Health. Jack, my 16-year-old Jack Russell, was hospitalised for two days and formally diagnosed with Haemorrhagic Gastroenteritis. The remaining three dogs were treated at home under veterinary guidance with the same medication prescribed to Jack, with the exception of antibiotics. The bag was purchased on 1 March 2026 — four days before RCL Foods issued a nationwide recall on 5 March 2026. RCL Foods collected a formal 1kg sample from the bag on 18 March 2026 and committed in writing to sharing the investigation findings with me once completed. Despite this written commitment, multiple follow-up emails, and a phone call, I received nothing substantive for over two months. When I set a formal deadline, Thinus Brits (Grocery Customer Services) promised the report by 28 May 2026. No report was received. I have now formally lodged a complaint with the National Consumer Commission. I want to be clear that my issue is not with Absolute Pets, Cresta Crossing, who exchanged the bag without hesitation. My concern lies entirely with Ultra Dog and RCL Foods. I am simply asking for the answers I was promised.
