Incorrectly debited for a cancelled policy, and subsequent admin fee charged to refund the erroneous collection

I sent a request through the Pineapple app to cancel my Pineapple Insurance policy on 20 July 2021. After following up a few days later, I received confirmation on 25 July that my cancellation would be processed as at 28 July (this was my policy monthly billing date and the same date in the month as my anniversary). No Mention was made about any further fees or charges. I was surprised to discover that I was debited my full insurance premium on 28 July 2022 (date cancellation was to take effect). I followed up and was told it was a mistake and would be refunded. On 2 August, I received notification that an amount was to be paid to me as a refund, which was R450 less than the amount incorrectly debited. Upon querying this, I was told the difference was as a result of an admin fee deducted due to “late notice for cancellation, as the debit file had already been sent to the bank”. There is no mention of a cancellation period in my policy schedule, nor was this mentioned in my cancellation communication with the agent and on final email. The policy was cancelled more than a week before the next billing collection date, and given the fact that insurance is paid up front and not in arrears, it should not matter when the cancellation in requested. Additionally, I was incorrectly debited for the July run due to the delay in processing my request. Really not happy with this and the agents attempt to use an unrelated term in the policy wording to justify the refund fee. The final policy month covered ran from billing date to billing date, and only required a refund due to error in being debited for the next billing cycle.

Was informed a senior consultant would be in touch - I was simply messaged by the same agent who I had dealt with all along who could not provide concrete confirmation of the admin fee for premium refunds and a stipulated cancellation notice period. Pineapple still adamant that the R450 admin fee for refunds related cancellations is included in the wording, which simply is not the case. My second point stands - had they not delayed with my initial cancellation request, the next months premium would not have been incorrectly debited and thus no need for a refund which was subject to the ridiculous admin fee. Certainly not upholding the “Treating Customers Fairly” Act in my opinion.

I’ve had no choice but to accept the outcome I suppose, but definitely won’t be recommending the insurer to anyone.
