Exposing Pineapple Insurance: A Cautionary Tale for Policyholders

As a paying customer, I expect transparency, fairness, and accountability from my insurance provider. Unfortunately, my recent experience with Pineapple Insurance has been anything but that. What I initially believed to be a straightforward claims process turned into a frustrating battle for clarity, fairness, and basic customer service. This post serves as a warning to potential policyholders about the issues I faced and the questionable practices I uncovered.

1. The Underwriting Process Mystery I assumed my premium and excess fees were determined based on a thorough underwriting process when I signed up. However, I was shocked to learn that Pineapple only conducted a proper underwriting assessment during my claim process. This caused unnecessary delays and raised serious concerns: • If the underwriting process was not completed at the time of onboarding, how were my premiums and excess fees determined? • What specific factors and analysis contributed to these fees? • As a 31-year-old male with nine years of insurance history and no at-fault claims, why are my fees so high?

2. Excess Fee Discrepancies When I signed up, my policy schedule (dated 2 January 2024) clearly stated my excess fee as R7 350. However, during my recent claim, I was suddenly informed that my excess fee had increased to R8,100. I requested clarification and received generic, non-specific responses. • They were unable to explain why my excess fee increased within less than a year of signing up with Pineapple. • How does Pineapple justify the increase what factors has led to this increase?

3. The Unreasonable Request for Movement Reports During my claim process, I was required to provide an extensive movement report, detailing: • My whereabouts the day before, the day of, and the day after the incident. • And to verify my report they’ve requested a full vehicle tracking report. While I understand that insurers need to verify claims, the request for data beyond the actual incident is excessive and invasive. This raises concerns: • Is it standard practice for Pineapple to demand movement reports covering multiple days? • How does my activity the day before or after an incident impact the legitimacy of my claim?

4. Additional Excess Fees – Hidden Costs That Defy Logic I was also shocked to discover Pineapple's hidden excess fees that can be arbitrarily app****. One particularly unreasonable clause states that if I drive to work at 05:00 AM and an incident occurs, an additional excess of R6,200 applies. This raises critical questions: • This system appears to unfairly penalize drivers who may be returning home late from work, while applying the same excess fees to reckless drivers (e.g., those driving under the influence at night). Could you clarify how this is considered fair? • What is the justification for such fees, and why are they app**** indiscriminately to all policyholders?

5. A Complete Lack of Transparency Despite my repeated inquiries, Pineapple has consistently failed to address my core concerns. Their responses are vague, textbook-style replies that sidestep key issues. Some of my unanswered questions include: • Can their Key Accounts Department provide specifics on how my premiums and excess fees were originally calculated? • Why must policyholders be fully transparent during sign-up while Pineapple refuses to reciprocate with policy terms? • If my claims history was not validated with my previous insurer, how could they have accurately assessed my risk profile?

6. Unfair Treatment of Not-At-Fault Claims Pineapple has admitted that all claims whether at-fault or not affect premiums. This is both unfair and illogical: • How does Pineapple differentiate between at-fault and not-at-fault claims when assessing risk? • Why are responsible policyholders penalized the same way as negligent drivers? • If my previous not-at-fault claim significantly impacted my risk profile, how is that justifiable?

7. A Premium Increase Without Justification Despite my dispute and their failure to clarify how my original premiums were calculated, Pineapple has proceeded to increase my premium. This raises the most critical question: • How can Pineapple adjust my premiums when they have been unable to explain how they were determined in the first place?

8. Insufficient Coverage for Vehicle Repairs This morning, I also followed up on the progress of my vehicle’s repairs and was informed that my insurer and their appointed assessors have only partially approved the additional material and labour requested. Several items were not approved, and the additional paintwork was only partially covered.

I take pride in maintaining my vehicles in excellent condition and given the significant premiums I pay to insure them with Pineapple, I expect a level of service that reflects that. However, the assistance I’ve received thus far has been both limited and inadequate.

Final Thoughts Pineapple Insurance's lack of transparency, arbitrary fees, and refusal to provide clear answers should be a major concern for all current and potential policyholders. My experience highlights serious flaws in their operations, and I urge anyone considering their services to think twice. If you are a current policyholder, I encourage you to review your policy terms carefully and question any unexplained changes. Insurers should be held accountable for their actions, and customers deserve clear, honest communication.

Exposing Pineapple Insurance: A Cautionary Tale for Policyholders Continues

When we purchase insurance, we expect fairness, transparency, and accountability. Unfortunately, my recent experience with Pineapple Insurance has been anything but. Instead of receiving the service and support I was promised, I have encountered a frustrating cycle of vague responses, lack of transparency, and an unwillingness to take responsibility. This blog aims to expose my experience and serve as a warning to both current and future policyholders.

The Issue at Hand

My initial concerns with Pineapple Insurance arose when I noticed inconsistencies in my policy premium and the handling of my claim. Despite reaching out multiple times for clarity on how my premium was calculated and why it had increased, I was met with a dismissive response that essentially boiled down to: "This is our pricing model, and if you don’t like it, go elsewhere." The refusal to provide detailed explanations raises serious concerns about their transparency and fairness.

A Closer Look at Their Response

Their official response, signed by Compliance Manager Timothy MacKeown, was riddled with carefully worded corporate jargon that avoided addressing my core concerns. Here are the main takeaways:

  • Opaque Premium Calculations: Pineapple claims that their underwriting and pricing model is "intellectual property" and, therefore, cannot be disclosed. This lack of transparency makes it impossible for policyholders to verify whether they are being charged fairly.
  • Unjustified Premium Increases: While they reference a vague policy clause about "inflation, parts costs, and economic factors," there is no specific breakdown provided to justify my premium hike.
  • Delays and Bureaucracy in Claims Handling: Despite providing all necessary documentation, it seems as if my 3rd party claim will be subject to an endless loop of delays, passing responsibility between multiple third parties.
  • Denial of Additional Damages Without Proper Review: Pineapple rejected necessary repairs (which were part of the incident but only became apparent during the repair stage) due to a lack of supporting photographs from their accredited repairer, which begs the question what comprehensive cover in their view is.
  • A “Take It or Leave It” Approach: Their response ultimately concluded with a statement that they consider the matter closed unless I take it up with the National Financial Ombudsman, a clear indication that they are unwilling to work with customers to resolve disputes fairly.
Why This Matters to You If you are currently insured with Pineapple or considering purchasing a policy, I urge you to think twice.
  • Are you comfortable with an insurer that refuses to explain how your premium is calculated?
  • Are you willing to deal with frustrating scenarios and lack of accountability when filing a claim?
  • Are you okay with vague justifications on premium calculations and premium hikes that are not tailored to your individual profile?
I strongly believe that policyholders deserve better. Pineapple Insurance markets itself as an innovative and transparent insurer, yet my experience and likely that of others suggests otherwise.

Final Thoughts
Insurance should provide peace of mind, not headaches. I share my experience not only to highlight the poor service I have received but also to warn others before they find themselves in a similar situation. If you are dissatisfied with Pineapple’s service, I encourage you to speak out, share your experiences, and consider alternative providers who truly prioritize their customers, rather than dismissing them when concerns are raised.
