A sore disgrace to the short-term insurance industry: Pineapple Insurance claims

Before I dive into it... DO NOT INSURE YOUR CELLULAR DEVICE WITH PINEAPPLE. Why? Let's dive into it:

Some history: I was extremely excited at the prospect of a new short-term insurance company entering the South African market with the ambition to take on the larger insurers and be a 'game-changer' to the industry... boy was I wrong. In my naïve excitement I decided to insure my cellphone through Pineapple Insurance and the on-boarding process was seamless. The staff were helpful, kind, and my phone was insured in no time...

Subsequently, some months later (roughly a year later) my phone was unfortunately ******... but thankfully I was insured through a new-age insurer... right? Wrong... I submitted the claim for my ****** phone on the 11th of August (same day it was ******) along with the ITC number, SAPS claim number, sworn Affidavit, proof of ownership, IMEI number, etc. etc... subsequent days went by and I was then asked to get a letter from my service provider (MTN in this case) to confirm that the device was blacklisted as well as confirm the time and date of last connection (which is exactly what an ITC number is for...but anyway), I comp**** as much as I could (even MTN had never heard of this type of request)... I was later asked to provide a plethora of information including a letter from the gym where the phone was ******, and much more. Nevertheless, I provided as much information as I could at the time despite being rather confused by the type of information requested.

Since then, now more than two weeks later, I am still sitting in a situation where my claim is 'being investigated' or being 'validated' by 'senior validators' and Pineapple (Brenda and her manager Tshidi) are unable to provide me any form of ETA for finalization, nor explanation as to WHY this claim is taking forever.

Rant over... but, don't be fooled by the 'ease'/'convenience'/'cheap premiums' of this insurer... insure your beloved device ANYWHERE but with Pineapple.

I have since lodged a complained with the underwriter as well as OSTI... pending further investigation and feedback.

Hi Pineapple,

Thank you for your response which reads:

" Hi Jason

We are really embarrassed by your experience.

In the meantime, one of our senior staff members will be in touch to help you get the matter resolved.

Kind regards
Pineapple team 🍍"

I was promised a "senior staff member" more than a week ago and was advised that they were 'on it' despite me never recieving a call from someone senior... a company full of false promises and based on the numerous 1-star claims-related reviews, it seems that Pineapple make a business of ******** their clients and finding any possible way to delay and/or deny valid claims. Again, a sore disgrace for the local short-term insurance industry.

I note that I am yet to receive any feedback from the above comment, nor has anyone contacted me from Pineapple insurance besides for the claims agent assigned to the claim finally responding to me, acknowledging my complaint and trying to defend her responsiveness/assistance thus far.

Further to the above, I note that I still have not been contacted by anyone at Pineapple insurance despite numerous problems that someone will get in touch. Furthermore, I note that Pineapple Insurance debited my account with my premium amount which further adds to my abovementioned belief that Pineapple are purposefully delaying this claim in bad faith, and seemingly to continue collecting premiums whilst they 'drag their feet' with regards to my claim.
