If I could give zero stars, I would.
On Friday 5 April my 94 year old Mother wanted to make a cash purchase at Pick n Pay Clothing, Northlands Corner in Northriding, Johannesburg. She tendered a Big-5 series R100 note to pay for her purchase, only to be told that Pick n Pay head office instructed all their branches to not accept old notes anymore. I quote from the South African Reserve Bank website: "All banknotes and coins issued since 1961, by the SARB, remain legal tender in South Africa." Reference: https://www.resbank.co.za/en/home/what-we-do/banknotes-and-coin/Banknotes. The refusal of my elderly mother's money caused her great distress and considering her advanced age, this incident did not have a positive impact on her health at all. She ended up not making the purchase as she did not have any other money on her.
I do not understand how any corporate company can instruct their branches to NOT accept legal currency. I will not be buying at Pick n Pay anytime soon.
Best regards,
