Terrible Service and Expired Products @ PnP Lifestyle Centre, Centurion

Dear HelloPeter,

I was at the Pick ’n Pay Lifestyle Centre in Centurion on the 18th of September 2016. It was a foggy, cloudy day outside, but a wonderful excuse to stay indoors and do your Sunday shopping before the week kicked off…

To my disappointment however, the fun and exciting experience of shopping was short lived…

After collecting all the necessities, we needed, my boyfriend and I went to the express till to join the line of people already waiting to be helped. We waited patiently as we were moving along ready to happily pay for our basket of items. When finally reaching the front of the line, the tenant at the first express till (Cashier name on slip: Cynthia Sadiki) called to say “next customer” – this was a bit strange as there was still a gentleman standing at her till (with nothing that he wanted to purchase or pay for) discussing something with her (they were communicating in their native language, so we didn’t know what they were discussing). We politely asked the lady if she was sure that the till was open and ready for the next costumer. She said yes and we took that as a “I am done with the previous customer; I am available to help you”. Sadly, though this was not the case… The gentleman who was in front of the till had moved to exactly where the products gets packed in bags and continued talking to the lady who was supposed to help us (Cynthia Sadiki). She kept on scanning the items, one after the other -never once asking for my Pick ’n Pay Customer Rewards card OR if we would like to purchase bags for the numerous amounts of small loose items that she was scanning while continuing with her conversation. Finally, after space had run out on her side to put the scanned items, she bothered to make eye contact and verbal contact with us (the customer who was supposed to be her main focus for those few minutes) asking if we wanted bags, I quickly rep**** yes, scared to lose her attention to the ongoing gentleman who does not seem to understand that we are being helped.

She reached to get 2 plastic bags from under the till, put them on the items that were already scanned and continued her conversation with the gentleman. We really did not know what was going on at this point… I quickly reacted and held out my PnP Rewards card, asking her to swipe it. My boyfriend also wanted to speed up the whole process (as we were taking a while now and not really sure if we were priority clients), he asked the gentleman to please move away so that he could at least start packing the items into the bags that were just waiting to be filled… The gentleman was not very co-operative and moved away only by half a step – closer to the paying point (staying uncomfortably close to us) … I made it clear to the lady who was supposed to help us that I was feeling uncomfortable with the stranger standing exactly where I needed to put my pin into the machine to pay for the items I had just purchased. She did not make any attempt to ask him to move away, so I turned around and asked the gentleman if he would please move away, I would like to pay… He looked at me with a non-caring facial expression and moved away by another half a step. I was really not in the mood to make a scene, so I covered the keypad and entered my pin. Waited for my slip and with the most unsatisfying shopping feeling walked out of the store at 12:20…

I was disappointed, angry and frustrated that a client could get this level of service at one of our biggest household stores and the only thing that could make me feel better was the delicious, fresh, 1 Kg Strawberry Yogi-Sip, that we just purchased for R26.99. On our way home I reached over to the back of the car and searched for the Yogi-Sip… After getting it out, I turned the bottle upside down and shook it a few times. I felt the yogurt in the bottle being very watery and not as “thick” as advertised. I opened the lid and found the yogurt to not be as “creamy” as advertised either, with pieces of yogurt in the runny water (it looked to be off). I turned the bottle around and saw that the BB (best before) date was printed as 18 Sep 2016 at 02:03… I think you can imagine the level of anger and disappointment that was boiling my blood…

I decided not to turn back, as we were almost home and had to just go through the worst experience in a store ever!! I didn’t want to be helped by the same people who just served me with so little respect. I didn’t have it in me to go through it again… So now, the store that made me regret every single item I had bought (feeling like I was disturbing the tenant who was supposed to help me) had now also scored money off an expired product that had no use to me – other than to remind me of the bad and terrible experience I just went through…

I have been a satisfied client of this store, but after this experience – I WILL NOT GO THERE AGAIN!!
