Teller pushes a groccery filled basket off the counter and instructs a gentleman in wheelchair to unpack it himself

Customer service or abusive behaviour?

Sphiwe is in his wheelchair and is balancing his basket full of grocceries on his lap. Waiting patiently in the extremely slow moving queue it's finally his turn.

As he battles to lift the basket onto the check out counter, the teller pushes the basket back at him, off the her counter, and insists that he unpack it himself.

Being wheelchair bound it meant that Sphiwe could not reach the counter to unpack his basket himself. But the teller, Millient, was having none of it and again pushed the basket back at him, refusing to assist him.

This is when I spoke up and insisted that Millecent assit Sphiwe (as I was too far back in the queue to do it myself). Sphiwe then turned around and thanked me for helping him. I called the manager over and explained what had happened and I said that Sphiwe needed to be apologised to. The manager said she would send someone over to help him. But no apology was given.

When it was finally my turn to be servied, I asked Millicent if she was embarasssed for not assisting a gentleman in a wheelchair. She said she wasn't as she didn't have a packer to assist her and she couldn't unpack the basket and scan the products as well. This was a blatant lie as the photos below clearly show the packer standing at end of the check out counter.

Sphiwe needs an apoloogy from Pick 'n Pay along with a Pick 'n Pay gift voucher. Discplinary action needs to be taken against Millicent as this kind of customer service (if you can call it that?) is completely unacceptable.

Today (29 Nov) Millicent is working at till number 2 at the Pick 'n Pay Cresta Shopping Centre.

I have Sphiwe's cell phone number and as soon as I hear back from Pick 'n Pay, I will pass on the contact details on so that Pick 'n Pay can do the right thing by Sphiwe.
