I am writing in response to your query regarding the use of Kosher and Halaal logos, on Pick n Pay Branded and National branded products being sold in Pick n Pay stores.

South Africa is a secular state and as such we are respectful of all religions in the country, of which Christianity, Islam and Judaism are among the largest. The right to free religious association, without **************, is protected in the South African Constitution and Bill of Rights.

The requirement of certifying a product as Kosher or Halaal, is based on a dietary requirement (i.e. that the product is free from pork or non-Halaal / kosher ingredients), of a specific religious group. In no way does this process reflect on or impact the religious convictions of the person consuming the product.

Should you have a query with regard to Halaal or Kosher certification on National Branded products, please take this up with the respective supplier and / or manufacturer.

Please take note that the Halaal logo on Pick n Pay branded products in no way indicates Pick n Pay’s support of a specific religious group or organization.

A Pick n Pay spokesperson said that halaal “certification costs are negligible and there is no charge passed on to our customers. Customers who do not wish to buy food that has been certified for religious purposes can find alternatives in our stores.”

When I buy a product with this stamp on it, I am in a way contributing to that religious company, someone is earning a salary based on these stamps. "please take this up with the respective supplier and / or manufacturer." Exactly what I am doing. The Pick n Pay branded milk is only halaal, no alternative.
