RANDRIDGE MALL PICK & PAY - BAD SERVICE AND ARROGANT ATTITUDE

I had an unpleasant altercation at the Randridge Mall branch of Pick & Pay this afternoon.

I had chosen a 2kg bag of oranges at the fruit stand, where there were 3 baskets above one another. The top basket contained naartjies, with a label indicating a price of R34-95, and the lower two baskets contained the 2 kg bags of oranges. There was a price tag on the middle shelf indicating R19-95. I chose the best looking bag and proceeded to the tills.

At the till, firstly the bag of oranges could not be scanned, so the lady entered the bar-code, and the till rang our R34-95. I told her that was incorrect, and at that price did not want it. She reversed the transaction, suggested I go and look again at the price, and I went on to pay for the rest of my goods.

On the way out I double checked the price, only to see that it was indeed labelled R19-95, so I called an assistant. She was not sure what the price was of the 2kg bag of oranges in the lower basket, and went to check. Other than a green label over some of the bags in the middle shelf, I could not see any difference between the two baskets and as there was no other price tag, assumed that it app**** to both.

The assistant came back and told me the price was actually R25-95. This was nowhere to be seen, and the assistant in the section did not even know this. So I asked for the store manager.

Along came a lady, did not introduce herself, just asked what was wrong. I explained the situation to her, and she then told me it was my fault for not checking that the bar-code on the bag matched the bar-code on the label. She asked me quite rudely why I could not read, when I told her I could not see the codes. I’m 57 years old and it’s been about 10 years since I last read any written document without glasses, but she could not appreciate this. She then told me that I should have gone to the area assistant, and got the correct price. At no time did she acknowledge that there was no price on the lower basket, and any customer would assume that the price tag app**** to both baskets, as the product was basically the same.

I then asked her what was the policy regarding refunds which Pick & Pay always advertise about, and she told me it only app**** to items where the bar-codes are the same. She ignored the fact that the till had wanted to charge R34-95, and the actual price was now apparently R25-95. Again she was quite irritable about the fact that I had even requested an explanation.

I told her this was unacceptable customer service and it was bull**** that she was accusing me of not checking the prices. All she could reply was that I was now using vulgar language and basically refused to talk to me any further.

I asked her what her position was in the store, and was told something about assistant…. and some mumblings, and she then muttered something incoherent.

It was her arrogant attitude, making out the whole incident was my fault, that angered me to the point that I swore, but she simply ignored anything I said thereafter. She could not acknowledge that they had made a mistake, in one way or the other, and apologise on the store’s behalf!

Needless to say, this was the last time I will shop at the Randridge Mall Pick & Pay, as my experience in that store over the last few months has deteriorated so badly, with bad service, out-of-stock products, and particularly bad attitudes. It appears that the staff have forgotten that the customers pay their salaries.

I tried to phone the store afterwards, but was told the manager knocks off at 4 PM.
