Poor Service from Pick `n Pay clothing

Received a Pick `n Pay clothing item as a gift. The item is damaged, took it to the nearest Pick `n Pay clothing store. I don't have the slip because it was a gift. Got told to take it back to the store where it was bought and if it wasn't damaged they would have exchanged it without the slip. How exactly should I know where it was bought and what if it was in another province??
