PnP's lack of enforcing wearing masks places customers and staff at risk of getting COVID19
PnP’s in store mask wearing policy is inadequate and places both its customers and staff at risk of being infected with the covid19 virus. I shopped at the Gordonsbay, Cape Town PnP store today and saw at least 5 customers with their masks dropped to below their chins. In addition, there were several others who wore theirs barely covering their mouths. One of the below the chin individuals walked right passed a so called PnP security staff member to the bakery where he ordered something from one of the PnP bakery ladies. I had noticed this individual twice earlier and at no time was he wearing his mask. I asked the security why he didn’t instruct the customer to wear his mask and he informed me he is not allowed to; he has to inform the manager who will address the individual. Only then did he get onto his radio to locate the manager. Some 20 minutes later, after I had passed through the tills, I went to the manager’s office. He was not in his office and had to be called. He was out of the shop locking up the liquor store. He confirmed that he needs to be informed of the transgressors and he will then address the issue. This process is clearly flawed and places both PnP staff and customers at risk. I informed him of the number of transgressors I observed and that one of them even ordered over the counter at the bakery. He then wanted to go to the bakery to speak to the individual. This happened 25 minutes ago, what is he going to achieve now?!?! I phoned PnP customer service to establish whether this is only the Gordonsbay policy or PnP countrywide. So the call centre agent wanted to get the manager Gordonsbay on the line as well in a conference discussion to resolve the matter. The manager at Gordonsbay branch is part of the problem; nothing will be resolved speaking to him. If he masterminded the process at his branch then he is the problem and it needs to be addressed by regional management. If he was instructed by regional management to implement the procedure then he is still the problem having failed to inform regional management that it is simply not practical and is not working. Every PnP staff member should be empowered to inform customers to wear their masks in the proper manner; after all it is their lives being placed at risk. In addition, the store manager should make announcements at regular intervals on the public address system, reminding customers to wear their masks in the proper manner at all times. Thirdly, have someone monitor the CCTV camera monitors and if they observe a customer not wearing a mask in the proper manner, rectify them via the public address system. PnP needs to be serious about protecting their staff and customers against the COVID19 virus.
