Pick n Pay refusing to pay back my money

I shopped at pick n pay Norwood mall for R900 odd, last Sunday. The lights went out as I was paying. I understand when this happens, its South Africa.

It went through and was approved on their system and registered on my internet banking.

The manager then made me wait 20 minutes while she decided that I needed to pay all over again because this is Pick N Pay's process. She absolutely promised I wouldn’t be charged twice and that the bank would refund me. So apparently I, the customer, must wait on the manager's pleasure, while I abide by Pick N pay's process and pay R1800 rand for my R900 shop. All while the manager is telling me how much harder it is for her when this happens because she has to reconcile the accounts. I don’t think this is professional and quite honestly is simply a reflection of the consistent poor service I receive at this branch. The people who work here seem to feel they are doing the customer a favour by doing their jobs.

I sent a message on the complaints line reporting the incident and the lady called while I was at work (and unbelievably busy with deadlines) and told me that if I brought the bank statement to the store, it would be reversed immediately. What she did not say was that I needed to come during business hours. So she left out vital information.

So on Thursday evening after working an 11 hour day to meet my deadlines, I now go to pick n pay to sort out the problem they have created for me. I get there and go to the desk and specifically ask for a manager. The two women and the desk point to another woman who has been lounging on the edge of the desk. I explain the whole situation to her, give her the bank statement and the two till slips and ask her to refund the money. She looks at the bank statements and says “there are not stamped”. I got extremely upset but controlled my anger and explained what I had been told. She told me that the accounts department was closed and she couldn’t help me but she took my card details and the bank statements and the details from both the till slips and promised to call or leave a message on Friday. At no point had I been told I needed to come during banking hours because I would have explained that I work and can’t actually take time off work to sort this out.

On Sa****ay night I see there is no message. So on Sunday I once again get in my car and go all the way to Norwood just to sort out the problem. I wait 5 minutes and they call a very sweet but equally inefficient manager. Who tells me the pervious manager was not a manager because they have no black ladies who are managers just a coloured and an Indian lady. Now he takes down all the details again but still doesn’t refund the money, and can’t give me a time line or anything other than “I will call you on Monday”. I am afraid I no longer believe in empty promises of unhelpful Pick n Pay managers.

I want my money back. It has been a week with two unnecessary and completely unhelpful trips to pick n pay. I have had to waste time and petrol to sort this out and it is still not sorted. Pick n pay is basically *****ing from its customers because you have now cost me R900 + interest on R900 for a week + petrol for two trips. And still I don’t have my money.

Pickn Pay Norwood seems to feel the customers must both wait on their pleasure and pay them for the experience.
