Money Transfer debacle

13th January 2017, my 17 year old daughter was looking at purchasing a cellphone over OLX. The seller convinced her that she could do a money transfer through Pick n Pay. My daughter went to Pick n Pay in Lakeside and was told that she needed to open a smart shopper account with her ID. I would have thought that as a minor, she would have needed her parents consent, but needless to say the transaction was done, she was given a one time security code, via sms to register and she was sent an sms saying that her registration was successful. She was asked for her cellphone number as well as the receivers cellphone number, which she gave to Pick n Pay for the transaction. Why they required the receivers number, I am not certain. My daughter deposited the sum of R4000 into Pick n Pay money transfer and received and sms with a transfer code. The sms stated to only give this code to the receiver who is to collect the money. My daughter had not yet sent the receiver the code, but she has to this day never received the phone as it is most likely a ****, but the receiver has drawn the money. Pick n Pay Lakeside staff although helpful when trying to assist me figuring things out were completely clueless as to how the money transfer works and kept telling me when punching in the code I gave them, was declined. My questions then... (1) why did Pick n Pay ask for the receivers cell number? (2) If my daughter did not send the receiver the code, how did the person draw the money? (3) Is it possible that the pin was sent to the receivers cell at the same time as my daughters cell, as Pick n Pay had asked for both numbers? Money transfer, upon my request says that they have investigated the matter and that there is no staff involvement, but they do know the branch at which the withdrawl was done, being Pretoria Stirland and that apparently the staff do recognise the man who withdrew the money. They also state that since they cannot be sure that my daughter didnt give the pin to anyone or leave her phone lying around at a party that they cannot do anything more. I am not happy with this and not prepared to accept this as a final conclusion. Since I cannot prove that my daughter didnt give out the pin and I cannot prove that Pick n Pay gave the pin out via sms to the receiver as well as my daughter, even just by mistake, I imagine, we just loose out on all of her savings. I have asked money transfer for a description of the man who withdrew the money and have been told to contact the store manager, of whose name they cannot give me, as I wish to open a ***** and theft case against this seller of the phone, with SAPS.

I feel that my complaint has been completely dismissed by Pick n Pay and that they have wiped their hands of the entire issue.

I still want to know why the teller asked for the receivers cell number and I want to know, could the pin have then been sent to both my daughter and the receiver because of this!!!!

Good day Nicki,
Thank you for taking the time to address your concerns with us.
Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience’s cause to you.
Kindly take note that the pin can only be sent to 1 cell phone number due to security reasons. The sender would have to forward the pin to the receiver to enable them to withdraw the funds.
We are busy addressing your concerns with the relevant stores.
Kind regards,
