Injury Treatment
On the 5th of June 2021 myself and my Partner decided to do our monthly groceries shopping for the first time at Pick 'n Pay Vaal Mall.
As we walked trough the isle gathering all the stuff on our list, I walked to the Hair & Beauty Corner to get some Hairspray. I saw that PnP stocked the "Perfect Touch" brand and I took a bottle off the shelve. I realized that it was a bit sticky and started inspecting the Bottle for any leaks. as I grooved my hand over the bottom of the hairspray bottle I felt it was not only sticky but also wet. I wiped my finger where the pipe was sitting on the bottom of the bottle and all of the sudden the Hairspray chemicals started Spraying all over my face and in my left eye. I immediately put the bottle down and tried to wipe off the chemicals from my face, My eye was on fire burning the **** out of me. I approached my Partner and explained to him what had just happened at this moment I saw one of the PnP workers walking out of the corner entrance. I went back to take the Hairspray bottle and approached him explaining what happened.
He asked me to follow him to the Customer Enquiries desk in front. I got there and had to explain what happened... The FIRST thing the workers wanted to do was to check on the Surveillance footage what exactly happened.... I was standing with chemicals in my eye burning the hell out of me and NONE of the workers there knew what to do and they kept on asking another person. I was Probably standing there for 20 min before they brought me a wet cloth to wipe my face and eye with. I asked the workers what's the procedure or instructions from the MSDS sheets to handle Chemical spill in eyes... I received no answer as it seemed they don't know what I am talking about. I asked again and they said "we don't know"
I told them that i am going to walk to the Pharmacy to get looked at and I will bring them the Bill as they don't know how to treat my injury... at his point a lady said she will call the store Manager. As I was standing their waiting AGAIN for the store manager to come... I asked the lady do they have any eye drops in their medical Aid kit to relief the burning Sensation. We Both walked to the back office where she opened the medical Aid Kit... This was quite frightening - That Kit was so empty and surely not up to standards. Nothing could be provided from the medical Aid Kit to assist with my Injury. At this point I called met Step-mom as she is a safety officer asking her for advice and what to do.
the Lady had to take eye drops from THE STORE SHELVE to give to me. my Step-mom advised me to ask for the injury Report sheet that I needed to fill in. this also took around 10 min cause they had to phone the lady cause she is not at the store - I assume she is a "safety Rep"
they told me I can continue doing my shopping while we wait for her and they will call me after taking my details....
I Filled out the Customer Incident Report around 12:30 and the incident happened around 11:50
Although I understand that accidents can happen, one would expect that the Safety officers of a big business like PnP will be better trained to handle a situation like this. My injury could have been far worse than this and the time it took for everyone to address the issue, was ridiculous. Besides the fact that no one knew what to do, there was NO immediate treatment available from the first aid kit and no safety data sheets to advise how this kind of injury should be treated.
My experience was not worth the money I spent...
