I Picked, I (over) Paid, and I was UTTERLY DISGUSTED!!

I entered Pick n Pay Liquor in Edenvale to purchase a box of wine which normally sells at R84.95 for 3L. I saw it at a sticker price of R79.95 and decided to buy two instead of one.

At the till I was charged R89.99 each. I asked the teller why the discrepancy, and I quote her reply - "I don't know , Bra".

When I persisted and said I wanted to see the manager, she told someone to call a supervisor. After a considerable delay, one arrived. After examining the facts, he said to me that although the name of the product I had purchased corresponded to the name on the price sticker bearing the name of the product, the bar code on the price sticker did not correspond with the bar code on the product.

I want to make this crystal clear.

The price sticker has a large black arrow on the left hand side pointing upwards. To the right of the arrow is the name of the product, which in this case is Namaqua Johannisberger. Below the name is the price, R79.95.

The price sticker was located directly below the product I purchased, pointing directly upwards towards the product. I showed this to the security guard and to the supervisor.

Throughout this process I was becoming increasingly angry. Finally the manager arrived, after what I consider an unreasonably long wait, probably in the hope that the customer would give up and leave.

After a lengthy debate and after scanning the bar codes, the manager's explanation was that the price of R79.95 applies to a product called Namaqua Johannisberger, which is a white wine, and that the product I had purchased is Namaqua Johannisberger Red, which is priced at R89.99.

I showed him the shelf on which I had found the wine. The shelf did not contain a single box of Namaqua Johannisberger white wine. It did, however, contain two boxes of Namaqua Johannisberger red wine. The price sticker makes no reference to either red or white wine.

A sticker placed below a product with an arrow pointing upwards towards a product indicates that product. When the name is the same, the brand is the same and the quantity (3L) is the same, then to a consumer of reasonable intelligence that is the product being referred to.

Whatever goes wrong on the supermarket floor is ultimately the responsibility of management. To attempt to pass this off as a mistake on the part of the customer who should somehow have known better is absolutely absurd and highly insulting. Do you expect shoppers to carry bar-code scanners with them in order to verify that the clearly-marked products on the supermarket shelves are in fact what they are stated to be? If that is not your expectation, then I recommend that you convey this to the rude and *********** teller who called me "bra", and to the equally rude, *********** and unhelpful supervisor and manager who attended to the matter.

Like many other South Africans I am constantly irritated by prices that are frequently higher at the till than on the shelf, but even more than this I am incensed by the *****-you attitude of the managers responsible for those mistakes. There was no apology or recognition of the fact that the store and not the customer was at fault.

I took the price tag with me when I left, because I intend to pursue the compalint if possible, and in retaliation the manager held onto my till slip. Yet another example of great customer relations.

Despite all the marketing hype your company spews out, the price you see is NOT the price you pay.
