*** ******

My son and I went to N1 City Pick n Pay to the Biltong counter on 18 Dec after 3pm. We were served by a well built lady who spoke to us in Afrikaans. We did not respond because we are English speaking and even though I understand Afrikaans, I could not comprehend what she was saying. She continued to speak in Afrikaans & eventually it dawned on me that she was telling my son in Afrikaans that if there was a 'moffie' behind the counter, he would have laughed but because she was behind the counter, he was not laughing. Being caught unaware, I told her in English that he does not understand Afrikaans, hence he not supposedly laughing at what she initially said in Afrikaans. She proceeded to say in English that because we are in Afrikaans country, we should understand Afrikaans. We eventually bought the biltong and proceeded to the till points. My family and I have been long standing customers of Pick n Pay and I am very disappointed that in this day and age, as customers, *** or not, my son must endure such treatment at an establishment where we pay for our goods. Banter with customers is good, but this kind of banter was uncalled for! FMCG associates are there to serve, not to discriminate against any customer whatever their personal beliefs. I dont have the associate name, but I do remember the face. Cant forget that after such a personal attack, even though subtle, Afrikaans or not. I would like a public apology for my son. Await your response.
