"Floored" barcode
I visited Pick n Pay Claremont on 1 December 2018. I purchased two bottles of sunblock from the lowest shelf as they were all on special and this is where I found the size/brand I wanted. Since the bottles were big I looked for the highest prices (R94 & R129) as this would probably be what I would pay per bottle. However, my bill showed they cost R231.99 each. I asked if I could get them for the price I saw and was told yes, if the bar code matched the product. I selected another sunblock product off the top shelf, the price was around R124 (not on sale), since I needed the sunblock and it was priced around what I was prepared to pay. However, the manager informed me they would refund me but the barcode did not match the price where the product was found so I could not get the product for the price I saw. He suggested I look at the barcodes to make sure it was priced correctly. He added that the shop is being renovated and someone must have placed it in the wrong place. This infuriated me since this product was on the bottom shelf, about 30cm above the floor and the code is so small no one can see it with the naked eye. Kindly advise how I am to see this code near the floor or be held responsible for the store being renovated resulting in the unnecessary situation I was in? I reflected on how many times I shopped at the store while it was under renovation (Weeks!) and the many products I purchased that were possibly also wrongly priced. I gritted my teeth and impatiently asked the cashier to ring up my refund so I could purchase the new sunblock product and leave. However, this, too, reflected a different price; R201.99. This is ridiculous! I expect my shopping experience to be pleasant and seamless. Why should a customer be expected to check the barcode of every item purchased to ensure it's priced correctly? How many other customers have left this store with items more expensive than advertised? I expect the store to ensure it's items are stocked and priced correctly and that customers are treated fairly. Should I have lay on the floor to see this price or stop to check every item I took? That makes no sense. Please address this as it leaves a bad taste in a loyal customer's mouth.
