Expired children's medication supp**** TWICE in the same evening via two separate online orders – and customer told to sort it out herself
I am extremely disappointed with Pick n Pay and the way this serious matter has been handled. I placed an online order through Pick n Pay ASAP for children's Benylin cough syrup. The medication supp**** was already expired, with an expiry date of 05/2026. I then placed another online order, and unbelievably, I was supp**** with another bottle of the same children's medication that had expired 08/2025 – more than a year out of date. This happened twice in consecutive orders. After discovering the second bottle on 08 September 2026, after 21:00, I had to arrange childcare and pay for a Bolt to travel to Pick n Pay Family Circle Centre (Boy de Goede) and back home to deal with the matter. I subsequently lodged a formal complaint with Pick n Pay Head Office and requested that the matter be properly investigated and that I be fairly compensated for the reasonable costs I incurred. Instead, I was told that I must go into the store and arrange a meeting with the store manager myself. I am the customer. This was not my error, and I should not have to chase different departments and stores to resolve a serious issue involving expired children's medication. What made the situation even more frustrating is that when I went to the store, I was directed back to ASAP, while Head Office had directed me to the store. I have essentially been sent back and forth between Pick n Pay and ASAP instead of anyone taking responsibility for resolving the complaint. This is extremely poor customer service and, more importantly, I am seriously concerned about how expired medication is being allowed to reach customers in the first place. I have photographic evidence of the first expired product, order records and correspondence relating to the complaint. The second bottle was returned to the Pick n Pay store. I have given Pick n Pay the opportunity to resolve this privately. Unfortunately, based on the response I have received so far, I now feel that escalating this matter publicly and through the appropriate consumer/regulatory channels is necessary. I am asking Pick n Pay to take responsibility, properly investigate how this happened twice, address the medication-safety concerns and fairly resolve the costs and inconvenience I have incurred.
