Discriminated against because of my choice of bag
Pick n Pay Maponya Mall has some of the worst service I have come across. I went to do some shopping after knocking off from work. Due to the nature of my work I use a back pack. As I entered the door I was stopped by the security that told me that I had to leave my bag at the parcel counter. I explained that I could not do that because my personals, like purse, cellphones, were in the bag and leaving the bag at the parcel counter would mean that I either take a risk and leave valuables or hold all of them in my hands, which would make my shopping experience very difficult. He told me that was the rules and I could not enter the store with my bag. I asked to talk to the manager, Mokgethi Moraka, who was unavailable. Another staff member helped me by calling him. The message I received was that because they have had a problem with thieving STUDENTS they do not allow back packs in the store. I then explained that I am not a student and that my bag was full of personals which I could not leave at parcel counter or hold in my hands. The answer was still no.
I know that Pick n Pay does not care whether I spend my money at their stores or not because my money is just a drop in the ocean, but I have promised to never again spend my money at Pick n Pay Maponya because of the way that they treat customers. It is discriminatory to say that because I am using a back pack that I will *****. I shop at many other Pick n Pay stores and have never been asked to leave my personals at the parcel counter or shop uncomfortably with all of them in my hands. I have never been discriminated against because I do not hold a hand bag. So the logic is that people who carry back packs *****? This is the biggest load of bull that I have ever heard. The manager did not even have the sense to come and assess the situation and use his discretion, but just decided that I am a *****, like others that have carried back packs before. I refuse to be treated like a ******** because I do not carry a pretty leather hand bag. The staff at this store treat us like money from Soweto residents is not the same as those from affluent suburbs. People of Soweto would rather drive to other malls than be treated like second class citizens by the staff of Pick n Pay Maponya. If you think that Pick n Pay is too big a store to close then ask the likes of Edgars who also thought they were invincible and would never shut down. When hundreds of people one day lose their jobs because the store at Maponya has closed down, know that it is because of the ********** service that they give to black customers from Soweto. Needless to say that I will not be shopping at Pick n Pay Maponya Mall ever again. If this store fails to reach their profit target this year, just know that it is because I am going to tell any Soweto resident that is willing to listen to not shop there. Even if they should reach target, they must always know that they could have done better, but it is their ****py service and treatment of customers that has stopped them from doing so.
