Cashier and customer screaming match in store
Shop: Pick n Pay, Rosemead Avenue, Cape Town
Date of incident: Saturday, 5 September
Time of incident: 18H35
On Saturday Evening, 5 September at 18H35 I searched for a till to pay. The cashier at till 3 had the sign at the end of her belt “TILL CLOSED” flipped up and visible. As she was finishing assisting her last customer, I approached the cashier to verify if her till was indeed closed, she responded by saying “yes, pay at the next till”.
I indeed go and do that. As I am standing in the line at the cashier at till 1, I witness the cashier at till 3 get off her chair and go call other customers to go and pay by her.
I immediately approach that cashier and out of extreme fury for her dishonestly and I start shouting at her, the fact that she was shouting back at me added fuel to my fire. I was NOT embarrassed and we continued our screaming match in front of the customers.
There was no front-line supervisor to defuse the situation and I requested that the cashier at till 1 go call the manager. My 11-year-old niece was shocked by this incident which affected her that entire evening!!!
The manager was respectful and apologetic, he called the front-line supervisor to question her whereabouts and I insisted that they take my number to provide me with feedback on this situation.
Today is Tuesday, 8 September and no one has contacted me yet, as I mentioned to the manager, I wanted feedback because I suspected this situation will be swept under the rug. – and it was by the looks of it. If only it was recorded for exposure on social media, I am sure it would have been properly addressed.
I provided the manager with my till slip because I insisted that he checks the cameras to verify my report.
