Broken products being sold at reduced prices at Pick n Pay Woodmead in Woodmead Retail Park
On the 4th of May 2023, I went to Pick n Pay Hyper Woodmead in Woodmead Retail Park just before the store closed. As soon as I entered the store, I saw three Salton pressure cookers by the reduced table that were reduced from R1399 to R500. I asked an employee of Pick n Pay why the pressure cookers were reduced and she informed me that it was due to the boxes being damaged. The first pressure cooker that I looked at smelt like it had been used and the rubber on the lid was yellow. I did not like the shape of the lid on the second one so I decided to take the third box which was a sealed box.
When I got home that evening I opened the pressure cooker box and I saw that the lid of the pressure cooker was cracked. I was extremely upset and disappointed that I had been sold a broken product.
I called Pick n Pay Hyper Woodmead in Woodmead Retail Park the next day, the 5th of May 2023, and spoke to a Manager for large appliances named Kenny. After explaining my experience, he had told me that this was the reason that the pressure cooker was reduced. I informed Kenny that an employee had told me prior to purchasing the pressure cooker that the reason it was reduced was because the box was damaged. Kenny then told me that I can use the R1000 that I saved on the pressure cooker to fix the lid. I was completely shocked and extremely disgusted with the treatment I was receiving. Kenny was rude, disrespectful and did not know how to talk to customers. I had asked Kenny if the calls are recorded as I could not believe how he was speaking to me and he said he had witnesses around him.
I told Kenny that I would bring the pressure cooker back at 17:00pm and asked him if he would be there. Kenny said he finishes work at 16:00pm but he would wait for me. I told Kenny that I would like a new pressure cooker and he said he can give me a refund.
I went to Pick n Pay Woodmead in Woodmead Retail Park on the 5th of May 2023, a few minutes before 17:00pm. I went to Customer Services and explained what had happened. I was informed that Kenny had left for the day. I also spoke to the Store Manager, Scott and an employee named Meshack and I explained what had happened and how Kenny told me to use the R1000 that I saved on the pressure cooker to fix the lid. Scott said he will deal with it. I explained to Scott that I would like a new pressure cooker and he told me that they do not have any more pressure cookers like that. I told Scott that I would wait until they do get more in stock and he said he can only give me a refund as he does not know if they will get stock or I can take the other pressure cooker that was reduced to R500 (which was the second box with the lid I did not like). Scott had then walked away. Meshack brought the other reduced pressure cooker and I asked him to take it out of the box so that I can see how it looks. Once Meshack took that second reduced pressure cooker out of the box, we saw that the side of the presser cooker was smashed.
At that point, it was clear that Pick n Pay Hyper Woodmead in Woodmead Retail Park was selling broken pressure cookers at a reduced price because they were broken and not because the boxes were damaged. I had taken my refund and left Pick n Pay completely disgusted.
My family and I have been customers of Pick n Pay Hyper Woodmead in Woodmead Retail Park since it opened and it was sad to see how they treat their customers.
I have not received an apology, Scott had said he would deal with it, but I did not hear anything back. It also seemed like Scott did not care and he was not helpful at all. I am extremely disappointed with the way I was treated.
