5 items of less express queue

This morning I was stopped by the teller as she refused to telly up my groceries, since it was a "5 items or less" queue, but there was nobody behind me and I only had six items registered on my till slip. Is one item really sufficient to treating a customer with utter contempt? I felt really insulted by the way I was treated.
