10 managers on Duty, non available to assist shoppers

Today I went to Pick n Pay Hypermarket Faerie Glen, for a larger than usual grocery shop, intending to pay for my purchase with my accumulated smart shopper points. At the till (till number 15) at 12:30, after the person in front if me had has groceries rung up, he asked to pay using his smart shopper points which he had converted to cash on his smart shopper card. He was then informed by the cashier that the system was offline, and he could accrue points, but not use the money on his smart shopper card to pay for the purchase.

The shopper asked if he will earn points if he pays with his debit card, the cashier initially answered yes, but then cancelled the transaction as he saw the points were not reflecting on his screen.

At this point the lady in the queue behind me asked what was going on, after I explained the situation to her she parked her trolley to the side and left the store, as she was a pensioner who wanted to pay using her smart shopper points.

The person in front of me was still trying to get his transaction through, and requested to see a manager. I also wanted to pay with my points so waited to see if there was a solution.

After half an hour and 3 requests to see the manager, a manager in a brown jacket approached us, the cashier pointed him out to us, but he abruptly turned and left without assisting us.

The customer then got upset and requested that someone come help us to pay with our smart shopper points. The cashier checked the points using the system, but said they still could not help either of us.

At this point I decided to leave the groceries as I could not pay with my smart shopper points, and the other shopper did the same. We then went in search of a manager.

After speaking to 3 seperate managers, each telling us a different story, Yule the admin manager told us that not only were there 10 managers on duty, but he could actually put the transaction through using the smart shopper money. This was 45 minutes since trying to make payment at the till, which meant that frozen foods in our trolleys were already defrosting and would still need to survive the trips back home.

When speaking to the general manager Michael, he not only did not even acknowledge my presence, but also had no solution for us apart for us just paying for our groceries with no smart shopper points or benefit.

In conclusion according to Yule the admin manager, it was indeed possible to make payment using the smart shopper card. I checked my watch and for the 45minutes we were trying to pay for our transactions, this was not the case. The original manager who came to 'assist us' was on his phone, and as per Yule was busy sorting out the problem, which is why he just walked away from us without even saying a word.

If this is the way you treat your customers I will do my best to avoid pick n pay stores from now on.
