********* Billing and Unauthorized Medical Tests – Beware!

I am deeply disappointed with my experience at PathCare. My son recently had blood tests done at the doctor’s office, and his samples were sent to PathCare for analysis. We only consented to a Total IgE test, yet PathCare proceeded with unauthorized allergy tests without our knowledge or approval.

When I requested proof that these additional tests were actually ordered by the doctor, all I received was a screenshot from their system stating what tests were conducted—not what was actually requested. This raises serious concerns about how many other patients are unknowingly billed for tests they never agreed to.

Under the National Health Act, 2003, patients have the right to informed consent, and under POPIA (2013), medical information cannot be processed without permission. PathCare completely disregarded both, performing tests without consent and then attempting to bill me for them.

Despite multiple attempts to get clarity, PathCare refuses to take responsibility, instead shifting the blame onto the referring doctor. If they performed the tests, they are responsible for ensuring proper authorization was obtained.

I have since lodged formal complaints with the HPCSA and the OHSC regarding this ********* practice. If you use PathCare, I highly recommend double-checking your invoices to ensure you are not being charged for tests you never agreed to.

A medical service provider should uphold ethics, transparency, and patient rights. PathCare has failed on all fronts. Avoid them if you value your rights as a patient.
